04/11/01 Preliminary Riston Rangers 6 Hessle Sporting B 3
Played in blustery conditions with a strong cross wind this match was a rather patchy affair, although some good play was seen at times from both sides.

Riston came into the match against lower league opponents expecting a fairly easy passage to the next round. However Sporting had other ideas and quickly asserted themselves with Riston realising they needed to step up a gear, which they did but not often enough.

The opening goal went to the home side with Williamson tapping home after good support play by Singleton and Parkinson. Hessle responded quickly with a burst down the left side as their big strong number nine outpaced the defence and slotted neatly passed the keeper. Riston were finding it difficult to get into any sort of rhythm with the forwards relying on accurate long balls from Baker in midfield. Singleton scored Riston's second after picking-up the ball out wide and drifting inside passed a couple of players before drilling in a shot from the edge of the box. The shot took a cruel bounce which deceived the keeper and went by him into the net. Whilst Riston tried to build on their lead the only other first half goal came near the end when smart passing between Singleton and Williamson resulted in Williamson again tapping home.

The second half saw more of the same with Riston still failing to dominate midfield. Singleton's injury forced him to withdraw, with Parkinson moving upfront and Wiley replacing him in midfield. At the same time Swann replaced Brooks. Wiley's introduction had an immediate impact with some great runs and link-ups with Parkinson, resulting in several untaken chances before a wide cross from Parkinson was headed home for Williamson's hatrick. At 4 : 1 the game looked to be going only one way, but Hessle were having none of it. A Riston attack broke down with the ball immediately going to the other end, when Baker tried to control with his chest only to be penalised for hand ball on the edge of the box. The wall proved ineffective as the Hessle player blasted the ball wide and over Pickering into the net. A great goal which rattled Riston and gave heart to Hessle. At this time, importantly timed tackles from Winder and Hunt in particular prevented further goals for Hessle, as did Pickering on at least two occasions blocking shots with his legs.

In the final quarter of the game it was important who got the next goal. It went to Riston with Parkinson tucking away neatly passed the keeper after sprinting down the left wing. Again Hessle came back with the big number nine scoring a goal similar to his first half effort. The conclusive goal came near the end with Parkinson heading home a cross which went in off the post eluding the keeper and a defender.

With a final score of 6 : 3 Riston did enough to beat this brave and battling Hessle side who came through the game with much credit and their well numbered supporters can be proud of their team's efforts. Riston's men of the match were Baker and 3 goal Williamson.
