The previous three meetings of these sides have been fiercely contested games and this match proved no different.
Ferry started brightly pinning Spartans in their own half for the opening 15 minutes with Moss and Hughes combining
well. On 20 minutes and against the run of play, it was Spartans who took the lead. Spartan's first corner of the
game produced their first goal as their height advantage told and a firm header at the near post beat Ferry's keeper
Farrer.
This served to inspire Ferry who immediately went on the offensive. A series of corners conceded by Spartans produced Ferry's best spell of the first half when Greenham somehow managed beat Spartan's tall defence and connect with four headers in a row. The excellent Spartan keeper preventing two certain goals by tipping the ball onto the bar was finally beaten when Crosher picked up a weak clearance and his pin-point pass was coolly converted by Moss from the edge of the box for Ferry's equaliser. Ferry were dominating the game towards the end of the first half and on 42 minutes took the lead. The industrious Greenham at last beating the Spartan's keeper with a well-placed header, which was helped on it's way into the net by Chappel for his first goal this season. Spartans started the second half with more passion and constantly threatened to equalise dominating the first 15 minutes after the restart. Ferry however held firm with Ferry's "man of the match" Richardson making several last minute tackles. It looked as though Ferry had weathered the storm, when, on 81 minutes a strong run and shot beat Farrer and saw Spartans equalise. As extra time loomed, Ferry piled on the pressure and with 3 minutes to go, Hewitt collected the ball on the edge of the box and after beating two defenders placed his shot past the excellent Spartan keeper to ensure Ferry's place in the last four. |
