  Under 11 Drypool Season 2001-2002

14/10/01 Elloughton Tigers 1 Thorngumbald Celtic 3
Elloughton Report:

Finally we manage to have a home game at Brantingham Park, and what a start. This top-of- the-table clash saw 2 sides with almost identical records come face to face. This had the potential to be a great game and that proved the case. Unfortunately for us it was Thorngumbald who were quickest out of the blocks and dominated the early exchanges. The breakthrough came when their striker got the luck of an offside decision and raced away to slot the ball home. They then added a second and again got a tiny bit of good fortune when a cross-goal ball was deflected in by one of our defenders. 0-3 down at half time and probably deservedly so.

A couple of changes in personnel and a new formation saw us come more into the game and probably just shade the second half. Some dogged defending from Thorngumbald kept us at bay and it wasn’t until around the 40-minute mark when some quick thinking from a throw ended up with Steve Gibbons grabbing a goal back. That was to be the end of the scoring as neither side could take advantage of their chances. 1-3 final score and our first defeat of the season. We could have no complaints, close though it was Thorngumbald deserved their victory overall. Dane Mortimer took the parents’ vote for Man of the Match whilst Matthew Herbert got the players’ vote.

Team: Cross, Domney, Mortimer, Herbert, Scott, Gibbons, Shaw, Watkin, Duerden (sub: McCune), Arksey (sub: Hussain), Hardaker

Thorngumbald Report:

This was an excellent advert for Under 11 football by two teams who really should be playing in the Myton league.End to end from start to finish play in great spirit by two sides unbeaten so far , it was Celtic who took the honours with three well taken strikes by Ben Regan, the defence of Lilley, Whitfield and Shaw and Gill in goal were outstanding. Excellently refereed by G.Mortimer the Elloughton assistant manager.
