  Under 14 Drypool Season 2001-2002

11/11/01 Riston Rangers 4 North Cave 5
Despite a cross wind, the conditions were excellent for what proved to be highly entertaining game particularly for neutral supporters.

Almost from the kick-off Cave went ahead with a great finish from an acute angle at the right hand edge of the box. Riston then started to play some good football, resulting in a goal for Gonzalez after a strong run and then Singleton scoring a tap-in at the post after a fine save from the Cave keeper. Half time 2 : 1 to Riston.

The second half began with Cave the more determined and quite quickly finding an equaliser and then taking a 3 ; 2 lead. The game continued end to end with Riston playing the better football, but Cave's two big strong forwards still caused problems for the Riston defence. Riston rallied and determined work by Phil Keith resulted in Gonzalez thrashing the ball home from the edge of the area. Riston were well on top at this point but squandered countless chances, although Williamson's smart turn and shot left the keeper without a chance and again gave Riston the lead. Further pressure from Cave saw them gain a free quick at the edge of box, which they expertly despatched into the top corner. Another long ball from the back left resulted in Cave going 5 : 4 up after Riston's fullback unfortunately slipped at the wrong time.

With the game on a knife edge there were further chances for both teams but none were taken. The result was highly disappointing for Riston who deserved to get something out of the game particulrly given the number of chances they had. In the end it was North Cave's much superior finishing which proved the difference.

Riston's men of the match were Steve Hunt and Nicky Winder who must both be wondering how they played that well and still ended up on the losing team.
