Gala were defending their 100% record against third placed Mill Lane.
The weather was perfect for football, and it was the visitors who were
on top in the early stages with Mark Young putting in good defensive work. As
the game progressed Gala were struggling to get any shape into their play,
with only Giblin doing any effective work in midfield.
Mill Lane had a couple of well taken corners beaten away when Gala hit
the ball through to Stafford who went on a great run, his cross was only
half cleared to Neal who slammed the ball home to give Gala a rather
fortunate halftime lead.
The Gala manager gave a critical halftime teamtalk and made it clear he wanted an improvement. The Home Team now began to up the tempo and both Stafford and Thompson went close. Mill Lane then should have equalised but squandered an easy opportunity. This galvanised Gala into action and a great pass by Giblin put Stafford in to slam the ball at the keeper and got the rebound to make the score 2-0. It was all Gala now, and it came as no surprise when Adams put in Neal who calmly chipped the keeper to make it three. Good work from Chadwick in midfield gave Mickman the chance to go on a solo run before making it four. For the first time this season Gala had a full squad to choose from and they made a series of substitutions. Unfortunately for the sub-keeper he mis-handled a Mill Lane cross to gift a goal to the visitors. Mill Lane then gave Gala a gift goal back, good work by Mickman gave Neal the opportunity to make it five but his shot was charged down,the defence then got into a muddle to give him another chance to walk the ball into the net for his hat-trick. This was the last real action of the game and Gala strolled to a 5-1 victory. Though not a great performance it was workmanlike with good games from Young, Chadwick, Giblin and Walker with efficient finishing from Neal and Stafford. A special mention for Dave Burton who has filled in as keeper for the last few game and done a great job. Final Score: Gala Boys 5 - 1 Mill Lane Gala scorers: Neal 3, Stafford 1 and Mickman 1. |
