Spartans returned to league action with a game against Shiptonthorpe Utd who were level with Spartans in the
league having both lost once this season. Therefore it was vital that they would gain a victory in order to maintain
their push for promotion. The opening period saw Spartans pressing towards their opponents goal and creating a few
half chances which were missed.Shiptonthorpe although not troubling the Spartans defence challenged for every ball
and made it a hard fought affair.Spartans were not to be denied though and took the lead on 20 minutes when Dan Barry
scored direct from a corner. They increased the lead before the interval when a Jack Slinn cross found Scott Lapworth
who volleyed home a spectacular shot from outside the area leaving the Shiptonthorpe keeper stranded. The final few
minutes of the opening half saw the visitors deny Spartans on several occasions to leave the scoreline 2-0 at the
interval.
The opening period of the second half saw Spartans gain a penalty on 46 minutes for a blatant push on John Hall in the area.Scott Lapworth netted with ease to gain their third goal.It was wave after wave of attack now and it was no surprise when Tom Cross found space in the area to fire the ball home. John Hall made it 5 when volleying home from a corner and the 6th came when Scott Lapworth completed his hat-trick with a shot which was fortunate to find its way into the net. Danny Green was denied what would have been a superb goal after a long run being denied only by a last ditch tackle. He gained his reward though when finding the net with almost the last kick to give Spartans a 7-0 victory. MANAGERS COMMENTS: Another excellent team performance throughout against a strong and determined Shiptonthorpe side who battled to the end. Special mention for Steve Read and Nicky Cruddas who seem to be forming a solid partnership at the centre of the defence and for Danny Cowton who after replacing a untroubled Daniel Neal had to make 2 superb saves to keep the Spartans goal intact. Having 2 great keepers at the club is a nice problem to have as both are fighting for the 1 position and keeping each other playing to the best of their abilities. |
