Gala Boys found themselves without three key players, due to injury,
for this top of the table clash. The game started at a tremendous pace
with both sides realising the importance of this particular fixture.
Gala were first to threaten a goal when a fine run and cross from Neal
was almost put into the net. The game flowed from end to end with power
and passion, and Gala were getting the more clear cut chances.
A desparate challenge by Hedon on the edge of the area conceded a free
kick, the well struck cross was turned into the net by Stafford, a true
strikers goal.
Hedon strived hard to get back into the game, but Gala's defence,
marshalled
well by makeshift centreback Hewitt, held firm to give the home team a
one
goal advantage at the interval.
Both teams had needed the break and refreshments, but it was Hedon who started the second half the stronger and it took all Gala's resolve to keep them at bay. Just as Gala had seemed to weather the storm Hedon latched onto a poor defensive clearance to slide home a scrappy goal to level on the hour. It was now a question of who wanted the most, and instead of wilting, Gala raised their efforts and began to force Hedon on the back foot. Hedon once again conceded a free kick in a danger area, and though a fair way out Davies crashed a savage shot into the roof of the net to put Gala back into the lead. To Hedons credit they played some fine controlled attacking football, and Gala were beginning to look tired. Despite a stream of free kicks and corners, Hedon were not carving out any really good efforts on goal and Gala should have converted two good chances to put the game out of reach. As it was both teams were out on their feet at the end and Gala deservedly took the points with a 2-1 result. It was a great game to watch, with flowing football, crashing tackles, and a good attitude by both teams, helped by a referee who allowed the game to be played as it should be played. For the home team Hewitt was the man of the match, though every player can be proud of their effort. |
