Hessle Vikings took on the unbeaten Gala Boys on their ground at
Kingston
High in very blustery conditions.
Gala started the game with a strong wind at their backs and exerted
early
pressure, with Frasier sending in a good early shot. Good work by Neal
and
then Giblin gave Gala early encouragement to carry on their unbeaten
run.
As the half wore on Vikings were more and more getting on top and but
for
very poor finishing could have been three goals to the good. It came as
no
surprise when Vikings broke away and scored a very good angled goal
into the
corner of the Gala net. Gala couldn't settle and it came as some relief
when
the half-time whistle came.
With the wind now against them Gala went from bad to worse, Frasier went off injured and Young soon followed with a bad leg injury. The Viking team adapted to the conditions very well and were now in total command, but the finishing of their forwards was so poor that it had to be seen to be believed. As the game was now being played almost totally in the Gala half it was amazing that they were only one goal down. That was soon to change, when five minutes from time Vikings gained yet another corner and from the ensuing scramble scored a second goal to clinch the game. This was Gala's worst performance of the season, though it could be argued that Vikings played so well that they didn't let Gala play. Gala were under so much pressure that you couldn't pick anyone out who had a good game except that Orr in goal did a fair share of shot stopping. If Gala are to go on and win the title, it will take better performances than this and more commitment from players who let the manager down by not turning up at all. All in all a disappointing day for Gala but a great day for Vikings. |
