  Under 18 Division 2 Season 2001-2002

06/01/02 Sutton Trust FC 1 Gala Boys AFC 8
The game was held up for almost an hour whilst the caretaker was finally roused to send his wife to open up the ground, which wasn't appreciated much by the two teams as it was absolutely freezing. The Christmas break seemed to have affected Gala the most, and they started very sluggishly. All the early chances went to Sutton and a combination of poor shooting and good goalkeeping by Gala's Orr kept the score level in the first quarter. Davies came near to scoring for Gala and the Sutton keeper made two good saves as Gala brushed off the cobwebs. Mickman was doing good work on the right and provided Davies with a chance that he duly put away to make it 1-0 to Gala. Adams was pulling the strings in midfield and he nearly put Stafford in on goal. The second goal soon came for Gala when Mickman made it two with a fine angled shot after intense Gala pressure. Sutton were not being overun by any means and only good saves by Orr kept them out. Adams made the third goal with a great pass which was touched on by Stafford for Mickman to score his second. Though Sutton were trying hard they couldn't get past the defensive trio of Young, Heath and Giblin. The Gala pressure was finally beginning to break Sutton, and when Adams smashed in a fine goal it was all over as a contest.

A header by Mickman from a good cross by the hard working Davies made it five for Gala and his own personal hat-trick. With the game won Gala made three substitutions. Fullback Moore who'd had a quiet game made a good run and pass for Thompson to make it 6-0. Just when it looked like a whitewash Sutton got a disputed penalty and despite Orr palming the shot onto the bar the ball was headed back into the net. This seemed to urge Gala on even more and it was a very one sided contest now. Stafford had so many chances throughout the game and seemed fated not to score, but when his goal did come it was special, with the keeper lucky not to get in the way. As so often happens the goals come in pairs and Stafford completed the scoreline with another goal to make the final score 8-1. This game was the last one for Gala's Hewitt who is joining the Army. He has been with the club from the start and we wish him well for his future. This result made it seven undefeated games and Adams and Mickman shone in a very hardworking performance. Danny Orr was booked for dissent. The referee wasn't too popular, but he did in fact have a good game, perhaps too good to be appreciated.
