After their win in the East Riding Youth Cup last week it was back to
the
league for Gala against second in the division, Westella & Willerby.
Danny Orr was back in goal after a lengthy lay-off due to injury, and
Paul
Moore was the unlucky player to take his turn on missing a match.
This was a vital fixture for both teams and it got off to a sensational
start
when Young played a good ball out of defence to Neal who split the
Westella
back line with a great pass to Mickman who crossed to Burton who turned
the
ball into the net at the second attempt.
A few moments later a long pass by Chadwick found Burton again and he
duly
hit the ball home to put the home side two up after ten minutes.
Westella, though rattled, did manage to settle down, but though playing
good
football couldn't trouble the Gala back four. Another good pass by Neal
put
Davies in on goal but he shot poorly. The same player did better with a
free
kick on the edge of the area, narrowly going wide.
The game went into a quiet period and Young and Heath did good
defensive work
for Gala together with Hewitt and Chadwick. Right on halftime Burton
broke
through for Gala and had only to pass to two unmarked players to make
it
three, but chose to go for glory and the chance went begging.
Manager Tony Kipling urged his players to up the tempo in his halftime teamtalk, especially to track back more from the forwards and midfield. From the kick-off Gala lost the ball in midfield and Westella broke to score a simple goal to make it 2-1. The Gala team were shocked and Westella got on top briefly to almost snatch an equaliser, but mis-hit the shot. The game began to get physical and Hewitt and Young both proved to be up to the task. Gala began to get on top again and it was once again Neal who pinpointed a pass to Davies who raced through and seeing the keeper stray of his line cleverly lobbed him to make it 3-1. The Gala work rate never slackened and Westella were being ground down. Gala brought on Thompson, Frasier and Adams and the new faces helped to increase the Gala domination. The game ended with Gala well on top but unable to increase their lead.It was a good all round performance. Orr in goal had a few good saves too make and proved himself up to the task. Neal, Davies and Walker got through tons of work in midfield and the back four were rarely troubled. Giblin played as linkman at the back and worked hard and Burton not only scored two but unsettled the Westella defence with his physical game. Mickman had a good time on the right wing and the subs all played a valuable role in this deserved victory. With six wins out of six Gala have the platform for their assault on the league title, but only first class performances in ALL matches will do as all the other teams will be out to beat the leaders. |
