Spartans returned to league action with a home fixture against Cottingham Rangers.
Following on from their last 2 impressive performances they struggled to meet the standards
they have set themselves although early chances for Lapworth should have given Spartans the
lead. On 15 minutes Dan Barrys cross eluded everyone and Tom Cross returned the ball in for
Scott Lapworth to head home. Two minutes later a quick throw found Lapworth who returned
the favour and played in Tom Cross who finished with ease. Spartans then gave Cottingham a
way back into the game when a rare error from Neal allowed the Cottingham forward to reduce
the deficit. Before the interval a through ball from Hall saw Lapworth lose his marker and
place a fine shot past the keeper.
Half time Brid Spartans 3 Cottingham 1 Spartans increased their lead 15 minutes into the 2nd half when Cruddas raced onto a short back pass and applied a neat finish. Keeper Neal then atoned for his earlier error when making a great save from a well struck free kick. Within minutes Tom Cross again found space and centred for John Hall to head home. The game should have been made safe when a through ball led to Luke Boynton scoring Spartans sixth. The last 15 minutes saw Cottingham close the scoreline when slack play allowed their forwards to score twice. Towards the end Spartans pressed forward but were unable to finish any of the many chances they created. Managers Comments:- Not a brilliant prerformance but to win when not at your best is always the sign of a good team.We all know we can play a lot better but the result today was more important than the performance. Next week sees our final league match of the year away at Tickton. |
