The weather was wet and windy for this top of the table clash between
the
only unbeaten teams left in the League.
From the start Springhead made their intentions clear by continually
using
wind advantage to by-pass their midfield with raking long balls that
caused
problems in the Gala ranks early on.
The best football was coming from Gala and Neal went close after good
work
from Mickman. Though dominating the game for long periods Gala came
near to
conceding goals after poor defending by Moore and Hewitt. A rash foul
by
Young almost gave Springhead a goal from the free kick but Gala cleared
and
Moore combined well with Davies to give Neal the chance to put them
ahead
with a close in header.
The Gala defence had now got used to the route one tactics and
competent
defending by the back four was giving the midfield a platform to
dominate.
Walker in particular was having a blinder together with Giblin, and
Gala were
unlucky not to be more goals ahead at the break.
As the wind and rain increased it was Gala who were now on top and
Springhead
were reduced to more long balls that were comfortably dealt with by the
Gala
defence with Heath being particularly efficient.
When Neal mis-kicked in front of goal it only delayed the inevitable
and
Mickman soon made it 2-0 with a close in shot.
Gala rang the changes with Frazer coming on for the impressive Young
and
Stafford and Chadwick replacing Gibling and Adams who had both worked
very
hard in midfield.
Though never completely dominating the game due to the conditions Gala
thoroughly deserved to increase their lead when Stafford scored a
clinical
goal after a great run and cross by Chadwick.
The game flared up a bit when a Springhead player was sent off for foul
play
on Davies.
As the game wound down Springhead pulled a goal back when Howes scored
in the
final minute with a long range, powerful shot over the head of keeper
Burton.
This win puts Gala out on their own at the top of the table. Chris
Walker was
the man of the match with Neal and Heath running him close. With not
much
work to do keeper Burton kept his concentration to foil the few chances
Springhead had.
