Cherry Burton kicked off this match with obvious intention of revenging their defeat by
Howden three weeks ago. Very early in the match, the home striker broke through the
Howden defence and put in a cross that was headed in to give Cherry the lead. Constant
attacking by Cherry meant a lot of defensive work was required, with Lynden Theaker,
Vedran Buchko, Danny Murphy and Michael Stubbs working well and some fine goalkeeping
by Howden keeper Danny Beck kept the visitors in the game. Howden continued to battle
with midfielder Liam Theaker making some excellent passes across to the Howden strikers,
but both were well marked by the home defence and given little opportunity to score.
Unfortunately, a corner that was not cleared gave Cherry a 2 - 0 lead at half time.
In the second half, Howden pulled one back when a firm strike by Jamie Jackson was well saved by the home keeper but the ball fell to Adam Curley who made no mistake. Cherry were awarded a penalty that restored their two-goal lead. Midfielder Kane Walton, pulled another one back for Howden, when he pounced on a loose ball and fired it into the net. Howden kept pushing forward but unfortunately let Cherry's striker through with a shot that was well saved by Howden's keeper but the rebound fell to the home team, who made sure of the result with another goal. The 'Aquarius of Howden' Man of the Match was awarded to keeper Danny Beck who made a number of excellent saves, keeping Howden in the match throughout. Team: 1. D Beck, 2. V Buchko, 3. M Stubbs, 4.
