Both sides made solid starts to the game and it looked like defences would stay on top
and keep it tight. We probably had slightly more possession yet failed to capitalise on
the half-chances that came our way. Riley’s threat came from the breakaway and it was
from one of these they took the lead when a break down the left and a good cross found
their striker unmarked in front of the goal. This seemed to wake us up and a twisting run
and fine through ball from Mark Shaw set Tim McCune in on goal to snatch the equaliser.
Both sides tried to grab the lead before half time but some fine saves from the Riley
keeper kept us at bay, whilst a brave goal line headed from Michael Domney kept our
goal in tact. Half time: 1-1.
As we had done last week we started the second half in no mood to give anything away and once again dominated. The introduction of both Craig Scott and Steve Gibbons was the key as we slowly turned the screw. It was Craig who got the go-ahead goal with a fine volley from close range then Steve who added 3 more, the second coming after Ben Watkin had had hit the bar with both his first and follow up attempts. Lady luck certainly didn’t smile on Ben has he had previously seen another three efforts come back of the frame of the goal. Craig grabbed the final goal with a smart nut-meg on the goalkeeper to wrap up a 6-1 win. For the second successive week the parents’ vote for Man of the Match went to Mark Shaw whilst the players’ vote was shared between Michael Domney and Paul Wilson who had undoubtedly his finest game to date in a white shirt.
