Preston had 4 or 5 good chances in the first half to effectively kill the game, but they failed to
score. It was Rovers who opened the scoring following a free kick. The shot beat the keeper and
the ball rebounded back into the goal area after hitting the post. With the keeper still trying to
get back across goal, the Rovers left winger ran into the six yard box and slammed the ball into
an empty net. Preston attacked constantly after going 1-0 down, but Rovers held out until half
time.
Rovers started the second half on the attack. Within 10 minutes they scored their second goal. The Preston keeper cleared the ball from the front of his area, but it went to the Rovers left winger who was stood 5 yards inside the Preston half. He immediately drove the ball towards the Preston goal. The keeper could not get back to his goal quick enough, and the ball bounced into the empty net (again!). Preston were on the attack continually until they scored with 15 minutes remaining. Preston took a corner which was met by the head of an unmarked forward in the six yard box. With the score at 2-1, and Preston on the attack it looked like they would score again. But Rovers managed to keep them out with some good defending, and plenty of 'hit the ball anywhere'. The tactics worked, and Rovers managed to hold on to earn the right to contest their first Cup Final. (Special mention for the Referee who had an excellent game, and who stamped his authority on the game within the first 10 minutes). |
