Our first competitive fixture of the season saw us away to Howden Juniors in the
preliminary round of the cup. The first half was a tight affair with few chances and
almost all the action taking place in the middle third of the pitch. Both sides did
threaten to create scoring opportunities but some excellent cover defence from both teams
snuffed out any danger. Elloughton did however get the one break when following a corner
from the left the ball sat up nicely for Adam Arksey to force it into the roof of the net
from close range. Half time 1 - 0.
At the break Paul McCune made two substitutions that gave us a little more pace up front and seemed to cause Howden more concern at the back. This meant that Elloughton were able to soak up Howden’s pressure then break away with devastating effect. Further goals were added from a fine long-range drive from Steve Gibbons and a debut goal from Thomas Brownlee. Credit to Howden though as they still battled away, taking reward by forcing the ball home fro close range to open their account. This seemed to spur them on further and we came under several minutes of pressure. Relief was at hand as yet again we broke downfield for Steve Gibbons to grab his second and our fourth. Further goals came from Steve Gibbons (to complete his hat-trick, a second from Tom Brownlee and a marvellous long-ranger from Craig Scott to seal the victory. Steve Gibbons won both the Parents vote for Man of the Match and the one from his teammates for Players’ MoM. Team: McCune, Domney, Mortimer, Wilson, Hussain, Walker (sub: Scott), Arksey (sub: Hardaker), Shaw, Watkin, Gibbons, Hatfield (sub: Brownlee) Scorers: Gibbons 3, Brownlee 2, Arksey, Scott |
