In a re-arranged game, Gala Boys were once again without their regular
keeper
- Dave Burton deputising.
The tie pitted 1st Division Westella (last years double winners)
against the
present league leaders from division 2 Gala Boys.
As expected Westella came flying out of the traps and with more
coolness
Elliott would have put them one up in the first minute.
Gala settled and Stafford was just off target with a fine shot on the
break.
This gave Gala the impetus to get into the game and they the best move
of the
game so far when Stafford put Davies in with a real chance that just
went
wide.
The game was being well contested with Westella playing the ball around
well,
but despite all their possession it was Gala who were having the more
clear
cut chances.
A fine header from Giblin almost put Gala ahead from a corner but the
ball
went straight at the keeper. Westella were roused into action and a
couple of
wild fouls gave them the opportunity to come close to scoring from well
taken
free kicks, with Burton doing wonders to keep the second one out.
With halftime approaching Neal's pace put him in the clear and his
shot,
though well saved, should have given Gala the lead. As so often happens
Westella went straight on the attack, and Elliott gave them a one goal
lead
right on halftime.
With the slope in their favour Gala had high hopes of getting back in the game and they created two chances to score but neither were taken. Westella's passing game seemed to be tiring the Gala team and bad defending let in Westella for their second. It was all Westella now and when Elliottt put them three up it all seemed over . Westella seemed to think so too which was a bad move as this Gala team fight to the end. Gala were fifhting like lions to get back in the game and Neal almost got one back when his shot hit the keepers legs. Fresh legs were introduced by Gala and almost immediately they reduced the deficit through a headed goal from Giblin from a cross by Mickman. It was all Gala now and Giblin scored a second with his head from a well taken free kick by Davies. As Westella held on they had to resort to ''professional'' fouls, and a bad tackle on Giblin earned the defender a yellow card, and the free kick was narrowly hit over by Davies. The remaing few minutes saw Willerby run down the clock for a narrow victory 3-2 which they just about deserved. Gala were disappointed but a bit proud with their sprited performance against argueably the best team in the first division. |
