Following on the back of two successive league defeats we knew that it would be an uphill
battle to avoid another reversal as Myton League side, Willerby Wanderers visited
Brantingham Park for this Second round cup tie. A strong wind added to the challenge as
well although we failed to take advantage of it at our backs in the first half. It was a
strange half we could have been three-nil down but for a couple of goal line clearances,
yet we could easily have been three-one ahead had luck gone our way. Instead it was
Willerby who held a slender 1 - 0 lead at the break.
Undeterred we battled every minute of the game yet slowly but surely the game slipped from our grasp as Willerby took advantage of the wind to keep us under pressure and add a further five goals. Final Score 0-6 and an end to our cup ambitions. Beaten but unlike last week, certainly not disgraced, perhaps the margin of the score even flattered them slightly. As a team everyone could be proud of their efforts and this was reflected in the number of people who picked up man of the match votes, Matthew Herbert just shading both awards. Team: Cross, Domney, Mortimer, Herbert, Walker, McCune, Gibbons, Shaw (sub: Wilson) Watkin (sub: Arksey), Hussain, Hardaker (sub: Scott) |
